Solar Resource Nowcasting

This webinar features several solar resource assessment experts who talk about the concept of near-real time solar forecasting, or “nowcasting”.  This includes the concept of using ground-based or satellite-based observational systems and modeling approaches to provide forecasts of solar resource variability over a time horizon of 0-6 hours. The webinar is moderated by Dr. David Renné, President of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES).

Dr. Kristian Pagh Nielsen - Beyond TMYs, meteorological data for solar energy system simulations
Prof. Philippe Blanc - Nowcasting of high resolution DNI maps with multiple fish-eye cameras in stereoscopic mode - Preliminary

Speakers

Prof. Jan Kleissl

Prof. Jan Kleissl researches the interaction of weather with engineering systems, in particular buildings energy use and solar power systems. Kleissl is an expert on solar resource assessment and forecasting and is co-director of the UCSD Center for Energy Research and Chair of the American Solar Energy Society resource applications division. Kleissl's solar variability models, sky imager solar forecasting tools, and numerical weather prediction solar forecasts have been commercialized or used operationally to advance solar power integration.” Kleissl received an undergraduate engineering degree from the University of Stuttgart and a PhD from the Johns Hopkins University, both in environmental engineering. Dr. Kristian Pagh Nielsen

Dr. Kristian Pagh Nielsen has worked with meteorology, radiative transfer and spectroscopy for more than 15 years. He received the Norwegian Dr. scient. degree in Physics from the University of Bergen in 2005. He now works as a meteorologist at the Danish Meteorological Institute focusing on numerical weather prediction and solar resource assessment. Prof. Philippe Blanc

Prof. Philippe Blanc is the head of the research group involved in renewable energy resource assessment within the research center Observation, Impacts, Energy for MINES ParisTech (www.oie.mines-paristech.fr). He is working on the modeling of solar radiation and its assessment from in situ measurements or/and satellite images. His background is related to signal and image processing, data analysis and applied mathematics. He is currently a leader of the sub-task 'advanced solar modeling' of the Task 46 ‘Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting’ for the Solar Heating & Cooling program of the International Energy Agency. Dr. David Renné - Webinar moderator

Dr. David Renné President of the International Solar Energy Society since 2010 and Associate Editor of the Solar Energy Journal in the field of solar resource assessment, Dr. Renné is also the Operating Agent of International Energy Agency Solar Heating and Cooling Programme Task 46 titled, “Solar Resource Assessment and Forecasting.” From 1991-2012, Dr. Renné developed and managed programs on renewable energy resource assessment and analysis, and the integration of resource data into GIS at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). In his retirement, he holds an Emeritus position at NREL and Dave Renné Renewables provides support to both the public and private sector in planning and developing domestic and international renewable energy programs.

Webinar recording

We understand that sometimes the time of the webinar may not suit people in many parts of the world. While we try to alternate webinar times to suit as many time zones as possible, it is not always possible. Therefore, we will post the recording of the webinar and the presentations, on this webpage for 24 hours after the live event. After 24 hours, the webinar recording will be posted in the Members Area only.

ISES Members Area

As a special service for ISES members, the recording and presentations of this webinar will be posted in the ISES Members Area. Recordings from past webinars are also filed here for you to watch again when you like. To access the ISES Members Area, simply log into your ISES account (https://join.ises.org) and select "Members Area" from the top menu. Select "Webinars" and then choose which webinar recording you would like to view.

Certificate of Participation

ISES members may also request a certificate of participation. This is a document stating you attended this event and may be useful for your Resume or as a reminder of this webinar.

Questions and Answers

During the live webinar, there is a "questions and answers" session within the last 10 to 20 minutes. Unfortunately not all questions from participants can be answered in the time-frame of the webinar. However, we collect your questions and the panelists take time to answer them after the live webinar. The answers are then posted in the ISES Members Area, for you to read through in your own time.
