Global 100% Renewable Energy platform
announces new Executive Committee

Global 100% RE is the first global initiative that advocates 100% renewable energy. This unique platform builds on projects that are already taking place on national, regional and local levels and steers the global discourse on renewable energy towards 100% RE as the new normal.

The platform has now elected a new Executive Committee for the next two years from its member organisations. Elections took place during the Global 100% RE General Assembly in Bonn during COP23. The Assembly also approved a new work programme with a strong focus on further expanding the global movement towards a fully renewable energy-based economy.

The members of the Executive Committee each represent a key supporting platform member. They showcase the strong support the platform enjoys amongst the renewable energy and sustainability community, and represent the Climate Action Network (CAN) International, ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), the Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP), the International Solar Energy Society (ISES), and the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA).

Executive Committee member Lasse Bruun, Head of Global Campaign Coordination at CAN International, commented: “As the largest and most influential climate network of 1’200 NGOs present in more than 120 countries, CAN has the determination to mainstream 100% renewable energy in policies and plans of governments, cities, universities and business worldwide. For CAN, a world powered by 100% renewable energy and founded on justice and energy access for all is the only way forward to stay below 1.5˚C and for a thriving planet. The Platform is not only essential to the work CAN carries out, it also serves as a crucial space for connecting key organisations, institutions and stakeholders across sectors and across the globe and is thus crucial for the transition to 100% renewable energy.”

Executive Committee member Stefan Gsänger, WWEA Secretary General, added: “The goal of a 100% renewable energy world has two dimensions: Understanding that our world is full of energy flows such as solar radiation or wind which can be used without causing major damages to our environment is one crucial step for mankind. The other step is to make use of our minds and to practically harvest these abundant resources - many technological solutions do already exist; new approaches will be identified. This platform is the ideal forum to bring together some of the key stakeholder groups in order to jointly strive for a global renewable future with more prosperity for all human beings”.

Executive Committee member Dr. Tetsunari Iida, ISEP Director, remarked: “Ongoing exponential growth of renewable energy, especially solar and wind, in the magnitude of industrial revolution at a speed as the IT revolution would bring a disruptive change of energy, economy and society. 100% renewable is no longer "if", but "when", and even closer under an "exponential world".  Energy democracy such as community power become more and more important toward fair and equitable 100% renewable future.”

Executive Committee member Dr. David Renné, the President of ISES, noted: “The International Solar Energy Society, which represents solar and renewable energy researchers and practitioners, as well as architects, scientists, engineers, and renewable energy advocates from around the world, is excited to be joining forces with the Global 100% Renewable Energy Platform in working towards the goal of a world community powered by 100% renewable energy.  The Platform serves as an essential global voice to promote renewable energy as the solution to climate change mitigation, energy access and security, poverty alleviation and economic prosperity.”

Executive Committee member Maryke van Staden, Manager of ICLEI’s Low Carbon City Agenda and Director of the Bonn Center for Local Climate Action and Reporting concluded: “ICLEI is the leading global network of more than 1,500 cities, towns and regions in 108 countries committed to building  a sustainable future, impacting over 25% of the global urban population with our work. The 100% RE Platform will help to mobilise committed cities, towns and regions, ensuring that guidance and support is centralised and that they can connect to like-minded peers and partners. ICLEI is proud to be part of this Platform”.
