Dr. Hermann Scheer, Solar Energy Champion, Passed Away
Freiburg (ISES), 15 October, 2010. It is with great sadness that ISES learned of the death of Dr. Hermann Scheer. He passed away yesterday unexpectedly in Berlin at the age of 66.
The world has lost a great mentor and champion of renewable energies. Like no other, Dr. Scheer influenced and changed the political landscape and raised awareness of the immense opportunities for renewable energies in this world. As a German Parliamentarian he initiated the successful renewable energy feed-in tariff legislation which today is implemented around the world. As President of the EUROSOLAR and Chair of the World Council for Renewable Energy he worked tirelessly to promote and advance renewable energy policies globally. He was honoured with numerous awards for his leadership and dedication to changing the world’s energy economy away from fossil and nuclear fuels and toward a renewable energy world. His honours included the Alternative Nobel Prize and the Karl W. Böer Solar Energy Award. He was also instrumental in the creation of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) which now has over 148 member states.
As an author and inspirational speaker, he energized people around the world to support the change for a renewable energy future. He was a visionary ahead of his time whose ideas should continue to guide and inspire entire renewable energy community.
Dr. David Renné, ISES President: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Hermann Scheer. He was a true visionary for seeing the way forward towards a world powered entirely by renewable energy technologies, and he clearly articulated his vision through his many books, articles and speeches. He was also a great personal friend of many of us here at ISES. His clear visionary thinking and warm friendship will be sorely missed not only by all of us at ISES and but by the global renewable energy community. He leaves us with a legacy that inspires all of us to dedicate all of our efforts to achieve the vision he so passionately sought. Our deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones."
Dr. Yogi Goswami, ISES Board Director and ISES Represenative to World Council for Renewable Enegy: “Hermann Scheer was a true visionary and a pioneer whose ideas about policies for renewable energy are changing the world for the better. His passion for a clean energy future for the world was clear from the fact that he was willing to go anywhere in the world and meet with any leader in the world to help them develop their policies for solar energy. His vision will continue to inspire the world and will give us a sustainable energy future. I am fortunate to have been a friend and have the opportunities to discuss ideas on policies for a clean energy future for the world.”
Our sincere and deepest condolences go out to Dr. Scheeer’s family, friends and colleagues as they mourn the loss of an extraordinary man. His work and his vision will live on through the inspiration he has left behind.
