4. Standards

To slow down increasing energy consumption, CONAE generated an initiative to elaborate official Mexican standards that regulate energy consumption of those electric appliances that through their energy demand and number of units within the country offer a high saving potential with a satisfactory cost/benefit ratio. These standards are technical specifications that are publicly accessible. They were elaborated in cooperation with the involved stakeholders, like industry. Their application is compulsory for all producers in Mexico.

On the whole, 20 such standards were developed for refrigerators, motors, air compressors, air conditioning units, washing machines, etc. Four of them refer to non-electrical applications, like gas boilers, thermal insulations, etc. In their requirements, these standards are comparable to future US standards, which they sometimes even surpass.

Expected annual savings for 2002 through standards for electric applications are 9.120 GWh and an avoided generation capacity of 1.543 MW. For more information on this programme, please take a look at the chapter on efficiency standards.
